Wenzel Blaufränkisch Ried Bandkräften 2013
13.0% abv. Rust, Burgenland

If there was any doubt, this wine will dispel it. Blaufränkisch in the hands of a master is a sublime wine. When I first tipped the glass to my nose, I thought I was in Chambertin - Clos de Beze. The bouquet is open and generous, pouring on layers of morello cherry, strawberry and warm candle wax. With some aeration, I mysteriously found myself in Rocche dell'Annunziata, La Morra, where hints of leather and wet leaves danced elegantly with dark red fruit underpinned by notes of vanilla. Sensational. The morello cherry and strawberry continue on the palate, where fresh acidity and velvety tannins drift sumptuously to a deep-toned red cherry finish. Back in Burgenland we are! The latent power and energy in the fruit is remarkable. Balance is impeccable. This is a Blaufränkisch you will want in your cellar by the case because it still has plenty of wonderful surprises ahead. Drink 2028 and beyond. Superb value for money.
