Schiefer Leithaberg DAC Reserve Hoad

Updated: Dec 9, 2020

13% abv. Purbach, Burgenland.

Such a fantastic Blaufränkisch from Uwe Schiefer. Ruby colour in the glass with an almost opaque core. Wild sour cherry on the nose with cedar and forest floor notes leading inexorably to the forests of the Leitha Hills. Very charming and forthright. Layers of red currants and sour cherry unwind on the palate buttressed by hard-driving acidity and silky smooth tannins. Fascinating dynamic between primary and secondary flavours with cedar notes perfectly in-tune with the red fruit. I drank this wine over three days because I was curious to see where it would go. Well, it was even better on the third day so this wine has plenty of vitality and energy to go the distance, any distance. The fruit is organically grown and neither insecticides nor pesticides were used - bravo, Uwe! Matured in 500 litre used barrels for 25 months.  Superb value for money. Drink through 2035-2040.
